Pro
Football Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon was charged this week
with driving under the influence, stemming from a traffic stop in late
December. It's his second such charge in less than a year. I know what
you're thinking...can this be true? Warren Moon never won a big game in
the NFL and he's in the Hall of Fame? His career passer rating is 81.1.
His blood alcohol content is approaching that same number. Moon was
once arrested for assault after chasing his wife thru their
neighborhood, and was known to have many affairs. So the man did prove
he could dominate women and CFL defenses.
... WNYW New York held a contest, soliciting submissions of photographs that show how loyal fans are to the football Giants. Joe Gannascoli, the man who played Vito Spatafore on The Sopranos, submitted a picture of he and his wife holding their dog, which they had, in support of the Giants, dyed blue. You can't make this stuff up; you have to see the pictures. At least they left his crotch white. That way, his tongue doesn't turn blue. The
Giants always find new and creative ways to lose big games. So paint
the animals blue, make a naked human sacrifice before a giant owl if
you feel so inclined, but in the end it won’t matter.
... An
arbitrator has ruled for the Philadelphia Eagles in their case against
Terrell Owens, meaning the Cowboys wide receiver owes his former team
nearly $800,000 in signing bonus money, the Philadelphia Inquirer
reported. That's simply walking-around money for T.O. and nothing more.
It just means he can't go "make it rain" with Pacman Jones at the strip
club.
... The
Super Bowl is coming up this Sunday, of course, and I am always a
little depressed after that game is over. It leaves an empty void in
the potato chip-stuffed stomach of a football fanatic. But this year,
it means more than most when the final tick falls off the clock. It
means the end of NBX as we know it. Definitely going to miss NBX. I think we are all in the denial stage right now. It reminds me of that TV show that ESPN produced for a season, called "Playmakers."
Anybody remember that show, and how that ended? The featured pro team
was watching a game between two other teams, with their personal spot
in the playoffs weighing in the balance. And the team they needed to
win...well, they lost at the buzzer...fade to black...and that was the
end of the episode, the season and the entire show's run. But I can't
complain too much. It's been great to use NBX as an escape from the
real world. It's been great to make new friends here. It's been great
to showcase my writing. You all can reach me at mrtruth247@yahoo.com.
... But not so fast, my friends. All is not lost just yet. The powers that be at NBX are looking to continue
the site as a private, invitation only site open to a select few of our
most loyal players. Additional new accounts would be evaluated on a
case by case basis. I
am being told that there would be no prize money. This obviously would
help them reduce their expenses in a very direct way, but also save
admin costs. If anyone would like to donate prizes in exchange for the
exposure and obvious goodwill generated among a small band of players,
they would be happy to help facilitate that. So that's the tease...look
for more details to follow shortly, on behalf of Linda and the NBX
Staff. But, regardless, we need keep in touch. Sports is the great
fantasy world for the working stiffs. And that's the truth. ... Good Luck and God Bless, ... Mr. Truth
How does one even start? Just over 14 months ago, I stumbled across a site that I loved more than some things in life (not sex, no way it was better than sex). I could bet on games, all kinds of games, for FREE, and if I did well, I could even get a small check for my time. As the months went on, many things happened to me, the self proclaimed living legend of NBX (although there are many more people on NBX that are just as deserving of the name, but they have to take the name from my greedy little paws as I lay dying). I got married, I had a new baby girl, I lost with the Bears in last year's Super Bowl, and I mananged to almost always end the week in the red, but one thing stayed the same-my daily time with NBX and the many people I call and consider friends here. There is just no way to name you all, cause if I did no one would read it anyway, but you all know who you are.
...
What started out as, "Hey this is a neat site", rose to..."God I have to get home to get bets on the late games on my early game winnings" to ..."Geez honey, you always on that site?" and "Wow, that is odd, you haven't checked your bets tonight". There were days where I was as happy as I have been in years thanks to NBX, and days like today, where I feel like my gut has been ripped apart with a jigsaw and salt poured on the open gaping wound (Or the same way I felt after last year's Super Bowl and my demise in the 2007 NFL WSBC).
...
But through it all, there has been the comraderie, the bitching back and forth, the fighting and the cool just every day shoot the shit kind of stuff. The kind of thing that if I missed it even for ONE day I would lose touch with life as I knew it. Now I have to move on, find a new thing to spend my extra (and usually not my extra) time with, and I feel a loss, a sadness, that just fucking sucks. To all of you who have laughed with me, bitched with and at me, and sent me personal emails when I got married and when Ruby was born (JON, the dedication was great bro!) and when the Umpiregod Play of the Day started, thank you! Thank you for making me smile almost every day...
There is nothing more that can be said or done for me here, just remember when you watch a baseball game and think of bitching at the umpire for a blown call, think of me...As the Grateful Dead once said...what a long strange trip it's been.
...
Umpiregod, aka Jason Sletta, has been an almost daily regular here at NBX for over a year. He has poured his heart into the site, and hates that it will be ripped from him and all the people that also love the site on Feb 3. If anyone ever wished to reach the NBX living legend, he can be found at umpiregod@yahoo.com. Yes, there are other free sites like this, and I have the info, so let me know and let's keep the free sports books gambling in this country alive!
...
The above was posted by the founder of the POD contest. Im not really sure where the Living ledgend came from...but no matter now. I have truely enjoyed the many people here at NBX. Many people including MrTruth, ump and myself along with JON and dominic Sr worked very hard for free to make this a better site and I admit I am feeling quite used for the effort. ITS BEEN A FUN RIDE and I know I will now have to find something else to get frustrated at. In this crazy world this site was a little safety net that we all could fall back on. I remember the 1 and only time I won a Weekly contest I wanted to frame the check ...cashed it anyway. I never played here for $$$ but Pride. Now it all seems like a huge waste of time. I spent the entire NFL season in a private league and ended up winning that...Smileamile...guess Ill never see that 100 bucks eh? Bstrds always enjoyed the chat about sportscards. Mrtruth I have watched your coming wedding with gladness. Even basser I enjoyed sparring with about totally stupid shit. For those of you who tuned here...I am sorry...dont shoot me. I am only a real bad blogger who has a passion for sports and was fucking glad to share... Cant name all and I am sorry if I overlooked anyone.
In the end I DO understand business as I have owned my own and sometimes its a cruel world. 9-11 basically shot my electrical company into bankrupcy. So I will say adios!

If anyone wants my email it is commish422@yahoo.com If your ever in Nebraska drop me a line...maybe have a beer or 2 and bullshit about what was!

It seems time really does fly as you get older...or the NASCAR season is way too long. NASCAR got a start last weekend with the Rolex 24 hour at Daytona Speedway. The season starts in earnest Feb 17 with the Daytona 500. Now I am learning to like NASCAR but can someone tell me why this sport has its biggest event of the season first???? Don't think it would work in the NFL.

Monday's POD game was the Cards of Louisville and UCON. As I was only able to see the last 5 minutes it sure looked like the oddsmakers know their shit. With the line ending up at 1, UCON wins 69-67. With his score of 71-66 Philly713 wins via tie-breaker. Nice!
...
Tuesday lets move to NBA with Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets.

As I read my fishwrap today I came across an article posted by McClathcy Newspapers concerning the impendind divorce case of Shaq. It seems his expenses for a month are as follows...156,116 for mortgages,110,505 on vacations,60,417 on gifts,26,560 on babysitters,24,300 on gasoline,22,190 for maids,17,220 on clothes and 12,775 on food. Add to this the tax man gets 500,000. With a monthly income of 1.8 million from the heat and 220,000 in endorsements I admit I am envious. The dude spends more on gifts per month than my wife and I clear TOGETHER a year.
In the real world, which you and I live in these numbers are mind-boggling. I mean really 12 grand a month on food??? 24 k for gas...dude dont you fly to games or get a limo??/ I'll watch your kids for 26k a month...give me a call! Again the pay of sports stars are way out of line.
I will give Shaq some credit as he is a reserve Miami Beach police officer. For free. Whoopie!
...
Well if any of you were actually able to read Sundays POD due to NBX having issues, the first game was the Celtics and Magic. Score ending 96-93. With 2 in a row NBX user CALFAN wins with a guess of 104-102
Second was the Dukies and Maryland. Dukies made it interesting as always, but ended up a 93-84 winner. And with his score of 91-83 user dream1er nets 10k in free classic points.
Nicely done!
...
Mondays POD, if you get to read this will be a Big East match-up, with the Cards of Louisville and Ucon . Nice game on paper...tell me the outcome.

It seems so. Long time Duck Teemu Selanne, who has sat out up to now is leaning towards a comeback after the NHL All Star break. Great news if you are a Duck fan, this guy can be a scoring machine. Speaking of the NHL All Star game, check it our tomorrow if you get VERSUS. Lots of scoring and little defence, no different that any other All star game. Fun to watch the best light the board.

Saturday;s first POD was a blow-out with Alabama Rolling over the Tigers of Auburn 97-77. Cloestest score to the result was sent by calfan===86-77.
Second was Georgetown and West Virgina. Winning on a disputed last second non-call was the hoyas 58-57. Your scores were everywhere, from blowout to close, but the closest was sent by MAXIMUM CARNAGE at 65-61. Well done you two!
...
Sundays 2 plays will split between NCAA and NBA. First is the Dukies and Maryland. Interesting game.
Second is the slumping Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic.
You know your task.

Depending on which source one reads, either the Godfather Al Davis has asked for Lane Kiffin to re-sign...or not. Sounds like typical crap from Al Davis. I used to be a Raider fan, but issues like this turned me away. Raider Fan...can you clear this up?
...
Fridays POD was Lakers at Dallas. Again you jukies amaze me with your capping skills, as at least 6 of you were close. But then this isnt horseshoes and hitting a ringer was gjecat with a score of 112-103 Mavs. Very nice!
...
Saturday, with no football I decided to continue my tradition of two plays for you. Both in College hoops.
First will be Auburn and Alabama. Wish I could watch this one, but my rabbit ears will not get a signal.
Second is Gerogetown and West Virgina. I believe this is a National air on ESPN, but not sure. Anyway those will be your task tomorrow.
...
Football junkies you can always watch the Senior Bowl in football, I will most likely tune in.

Not much to rant on...still cold here but wind died down so its not as bad. Anyway straight to the point tonight...
...
POD Thursday was in the NHL. Now you newcomers to Hockey I will tell you that a final of 8-4 is out of the norm. But thats what tonights match ended with the Sens on top. Tie-breaker wasnt need as the closest guess was sent by mdriskell . With his 6-3 score ...you are smarter than 22 other NBXers.
... Fridays game goes back to NBA, with the Lakers and Mavericks. Laker fan...speak out! My take on this...Spurs Mavericks 129-118. But I don't count.
...
Junkies remember that the month is quickly coming to an end and we still need a host for the POD in Feb. DON'T BE SHY!

One of the few benifits of living in the Mid-West is we get all 4 seasons. Now I enjoy 3 of the 4. You can shove winter up the apple tree as far as Im concerned. Yes I am aware that some love the snow, skiing and the like but Im too damm old to be shoveling snow with a Temp of 0 and a wind chill of -30. Don't tell me, Commish why not get a snowblower. I have one and its so cold the thing will not start! Sorry but you can keep this crap!
...
Wed. POd was a college hoops tussle with Florida nipping the Cocks of South Carolina 73-71. Too bad I had to witness another Kansas blowout. Anyway, some real close scores submitted by you junkies, closest was 74-71 sent by godevils2001 for his second in a row. Driskell he's gunning for your record of 4!
...
Thursday we will shift to the NHL. Gotta have at least 1 a week. Game is Senators and TB Lightning.
Tiebreaker is total shots on goal for BOTH Teams.

Bet wisely!

It seems the Miami Dolphins are interested in injury prone 38 yr old QB Trent Green to return in 2008. At this point the Phins have nowhere to go but up, so this may be a good move. Clearly Lemons was'nt the answer, but yet I cannot believe that ANY QB can save this team as it currently is. Time will tell. Fish fan, what do you think?
...
Tuesday's POD was Michigan and Wisconsin on the court. A snoozer, with The Badgers winning 64-61. Closest guess to this was sent by godevils2001 , 68-52. Good enough for 10k free points.
...
Wed. POD stays with college hoops using the Florida Gators and South Carolina Gamecocks. Should be a nice game, but what do I know.
...
WHEN SUBMITTING YOUR SCORE INCLUDE YOUR NBX USERNAME OR IT WILL BE DQed.

The host, not quite ready to give up on NFL was looking for MNF tonight when the Boss (wife) told me I was watching my sports on the 18 incher and not the Flat screen. "Why's that dear?" I ask. "Well if you must know I am watching Dance War. Bruno and Carrie Ann are on tonight. And while Im at it, tomorrow I'm watching American Idol as well as Wed. night. So Get comfy in the basement, and while you're down there...do the laundry!" .... I get to the basement and flick on the tube and much to my Horror the first thing I see is a remake of American Gladiators with Hulk Hogan.....Wonder when BALCO will get to the WWF...or whatever its called now.
Really, who dreams up these shows, America's Biggest Loser seems to be a mega-hit, Dances with Stars topped the charts, Trading Spouses, and on and on. I WILL NEVER BELITTLE ESPN AND THEIR PROGRAMING AGAIN! Honest!
...
Anyway..back to biz....MOnday's POD game was the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons. With a buzzer-beating 2pt shot, Orlando wins this 102-100. Closest score was sent by NBXer JON with his 103-94 prediction. You win sir!
...
Tuesday's POD travels to Big Ten hoops, with the Michigan Wolervines and Wisconsin Badgers. Guess I am still smarting over the Cheesheads loss Sunday. Your mission junkies is the score of this. Be aware tip is 7 EST, AND INCLUDE YOUR NBX HANDLE....THIS IS A MUST!

Welcome to the PLAY OF THE DAY
The Play Of The Day is run by NBX player and Wiseguy commish422. Every day you have a chance to name the winner of a designated game and get closest to the points total. Do that, and you can win an extra 10,000 pts. Good luck!
Play-of-the-Day Rules
1. You must pick the winner correctly to be in the running for the 10,000 points. Pick the winner wrong and you are automatically out for that game.
2. Out of those that correctly picked the winner, the one who guessed the winning teams score closest to the real point total they had, whether it be over or under that total, is the winner.
3. If two or more people tie for the winning teams score total, it goes to the losing teams total score, with the same rules in effect.
4. If two or more people are still tied after going through the winning and losing teams individual score totals, the final tiebreaker is the total points scored. Closest to this total is the winner. If there is still a tie, we have a tie for the contest and mulitple winners.
5. There is to be NO WHINING about this contest. If you don't like the way that it is being run, you don't have to enter it. This is a contest that was started to be fun and give everyone a chance to get some extra points, so let's have it be that way.
6. The judge cannot be entered in the contest, nor does he care who wins or loses. There will be NO favoritism shown by him in this contest.
7. Do NOT ask the judge how many people have the game as the over or the under or how many people have taken one team or the other. All of these questions will be ignored. This contest is not to be used to help someone ascertain how to bet on a particular game.
8. Once you make your pick and send it in, don't even think of changing it. A bet layed is a bet played.
